Carla Esparza, former two-time UFC strawweight champion, has announced her retirement from MMA, revealing that her priorities have shifted as she embraces motherhood. Even before defending her title against Zhang Weili in 2022, Esparza sensed her career was nearing its end. Now, as she prepares for her final bout against Tecia Pennington at UFC 307, Esparza reflects on her journey and the reasons behind her decision.
“I’ve always said that I’d retire when this sport stopped being fun, but that’s not the case. I’m still passionate about learning and growing in MMA,” Esparza shared with MMA Fighting. “However, my body can’t keep up like it used to. I’ll be 37 soon, and I feel the years.”
Esparza’s transition to motherhood has played a significant role in her decision. The birth of her son changed her perspective, making her realize the importance of being present in his life. “Being a parent is the most selfless thing I’ve ever done, while being a fighter is the most selfish,” Esparza admitted. “My focus has shifted. I want to be there for all the little moments with my son.”
As Esparza steps away from the octagon, she leaves behind a legacy of resilience, skill, and determination.
