Cuellar vs. Nakatani will headline a bantamweight tripleheader on ESPN+
Twenty-three year-old Mexican star David “El General” Cuellar (28-0, 18 KO’s) will challenge Junto Nakatani (29-0, 22 KO’s) for the Japanese fighter’s WBC world bantamweight (118 pounds/54 kilograms) title in Tokyo on Monday, Feb. 24.
The showdown, announced by Top Rank today, will headline a bantamweight tripleheader that will stream live on ESPN+ in the U.S., and will happen on the one-year anniversary of Nakatani’s victory of the bantamweight title.
Nakatani stopped Alexandro Santiago in the sixth round of their matchup last February 24, to earn the championship.
Cuellar of Queretaro, Queretaro, Mexico will compete in his first world title bout, after turning in a pair of unanimous decision wins this year, over Pablo Ariel Gomez in January and Jose Velasquez in May, respectively.
Cuellar’s best victories, thus far, were his sixth round knockout of Moises Fuentes in October 2021 and his eighth round TKO of Luis Concepcion in October of last year.
The 26-year-old Nakatani, who fights out of Kanagawa, Japan is coming off a banner year in which he scored three consecutive knockouts, beginning with the stoppage of Santiago.
