Puerto Rico is moving to officially honor wrestling legend Carlos Colón with his own day. Senator Keren Riquelme has proposed designating July 18th as “Carlos Colón Wrestling Day” to celebrate the legacy of the iconic Puerto Rican wrestler, who transformed the wrestling scene on the island since the 1970s.
Riquelme explained the motivation behind the proposal: “After hearing from many Puerto Rican fans and recognizing the importance of this sport in our culture, we will present legislation to commemorate July 18th each year as ‘Wrestling Day’ in honor of Carlos ‘Carlitos’ Colón. His name is known across generations, and he has elevated Puerto Rico’s profile on national and international stages.”
Carlos Colón, widely known as “El Acróbata De Puerto Rico,” has been a dominant figure in Puerto Rican wrestling for over five decades. Born on July 18, 1948, in Juaca, Santa Isabel, Colón not only thrived as an athlete but also as a businessman. In 1973, alongside Victor Jovica, he co-founded Capital Sport Promotions, Puerto Rico’s most successful wrestling company, which still operates today.
“I am convinced fans and the public alike will understand how deserving this honor is,” Riquelme added. “This day will allow us to celebrate the history of wrestling in Puerto Rico and recognize its greatest star.”
If passed, “Carlos Colón Wrestling Day” will highlight the significant cultural impact of wrestling in Puerto Rico, driven by the career of its most celebrated figure.
