San Juan, Puerto Rico – The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has kicked off its 37th Convention in its hometown, San Juan, Puerto Rico, setting the stage for significant developments in the boxing world. This year’s theme, “The Rise of the Heavyweights,” reflects a broader focus on the future of the sport, including the potential transition of WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcárcel, whose tenure may be nearing its conclusion.

Anticipation is high as boxing luminaries gather at the Royal Sonesta for four days of networking, discussions, and celebration. In a recent update, our colleague Salvador “Chava” Rodríguez hinted that Valcárcel might step down, making way for new leadership in the organization. Notable representatives from other boxing bodies are expected to attend, further highlighting the significance of this event.

Among the convention’s highlights is the annual Latino Boxing segment, led this year by Argentine promoter Jesuán Letizia, following the passing of the beloved Jorge Eugenio Molina. Letizia reported that in the past twelve months, there have been 20 title fights in the Latino category, with two champions advancing to world champion status: Puerto Rico’s René Santiago at 118 pounds and Mexico’s Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz at 140 pounds. Since 1998, 54 Latino titleholders have achieved world champion status.
“Great work has been done, and it’s a collective effort,” Letizia remarked, crediting his team, the promoters, and boxers for their commitment to competitive fights. He emphasized the lasting impact of Jorge Molina’s legacy on the organization and its goals.
As the convention unfolds, excitement builds for tonight’s “WBO Champions Night,” presented by Miguel Cotto Promotions and All Star Boxing at the Coliseo Marcelo Trujillo. This evening’s card features local star René Santiago, boasting a record of 12 wins (9 by knockout) and 4 losses, facing off against Peru’s Ricardo Astulvica (23-2, 5 KOs) for the regional 108-pound title.
In another highlight, NABO Flyweight champion Juan Carlos ‘El Indio’ Camacho (17-1, 8 KOs) from Puerto Rico will take on Filipino contender Jayson Mama (20-1, 10 KOs) in a matchup that promises to be thrilling. The fights will be broadcast live on ESPN KNOCK OUT, reaching audiences in Argentina at 9 PM local time.
Despite the humid and rainy weather outside, the convention is filled with warmth, camaraderie, and ambitious projects aimed at elevating the sport of boxing. Esteemed champions like “Popo” Freitas and Marco Antonio Barrera have made their presence felt, with expectations running high for the remaining days leading up to the grand annual awards ceremony on Thursday night, hosted by the renowned Jimmy Lennon.
As the WBO convention progresses, it embodies a pivotal moment for boxing in Latin America and beyond, promising both reflection and renewed vigor for the sport’s future. With influential figures in attendance and exciting fights on the horizon, this event is not just a celebration but a launchpad for the next chapter in boxing history.
