Former UFC star claims he was promised $10 million by the promoter for his boxing pay-per-view fight against Jorge Masvidal
Former UFC star Nate Diaz, through his attorney, has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Miami, claiming that he was paid only $1 million of a $10 million purse he was promised by new promoter Fanmio for Diaz’s boxing pay-per-view fight against fellow former UFC sensation Jorge Masvidal. The news was initially reported by TMZ.
Diaz, who defeated Masvidal by way of majority decision (97-93, 98-92, 95-95) on July 6 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., claims he made a deal with promoter Solomon Engel and Engel’s company Fanmio, that would have guaranteed Diaz a total payment of $10 million for the fight.
Engel has since responded, calling Diaz’s lawsuit “frivolous” in a statement.
The fight between Diaz and Masvidal represented a rematch to their “BMF” championship MMA bout that headlined UFC 244 on November 2, 2019.
Masvidal prevailed, winning the BMF belt, after the cageside doctor stopped the bout at the conclusion of the third round due to a cut sustained by Diaz during the action.
