In an exciting journey for Mexican combat sports, Melissa Alexandra “La Natural” Díaz is set to represent her country at the MMA World Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from November 5 to 10, 2024. The young fighter from Nuevo Laredo has been training tirelessly in preparation for this prestigious event, showcasing the spirit and resilience of Hispanic athletes on the global stage.

From the moment she stepped into the MMA ring, Melissa has made an impact. “My dad and my coach gave me that nickname because when my brother had been training for two months, I tried a class and, after just a week, I was put in a fight—and I won,” she recalls. Her father recognized her natural talent and passion for the sport, which has only intensified over the years.
Since early September, Melissa has been immersed in an intense training regimen. She dedicates 6 to 7 hours daily to both physical and technical preparation under the guidance of her father and coach, Fernando Díaz. “I have a complete team supporting me, including my brother as my official sparring partner, my dojo mates, physical trainers, nutritionist José Ezra, and my psychologists,” Melissa explains, highlighting the comprehensive support system that has fueled her preparation.
Her final training sessions took place at M Elite Gym in the Dragon Club Fighters Academy, where she honed her skills and strengthened her mental fortitude. “I feel more prepared than ever; my mind and body are in the right place. I’m a more complete fighter now, capable of handling any situation in the ring,” she asserts, reflecting on her decade-long journey in MMA since she began training at age 14.

Melissa’s message to young athletes is one of perseverance:
“Don’t let anything stop you. We often face challenges that seem insurmountable, but they test our resilience. Athletes see the laws of physics as suggestions—luck is for those who believe in accidents. Sweat is for those who know victory is a choice.”
Her coach, Fernando Díaz, echoed his confidence in her preparation, noting that while she is physically exhausted from rigorous training, her spirits remain high. “It’s an honor to compete among over 60 countries fighting for gold—this is the biggest event in the world of amateur MMA,” he states.
As they embark on their journey, Fernando and Melissa will first travel to Mexico City before catching a flight to Uzbekistan. “Arriving days early will help Melissa acclimate to the climate and time zone. It’s a long trip—25 to 28 hours with layovers,” he explains.
With three consecutive victories leading up to the championship, Melissa is ready to take on the best of the best. “We already have potential opponents from Angola and Kazakhstan. We’ll see how the draw goes on November 4 and adapt accordingly,” he adds.
