This Friday, Mexican-American boxer Jose ‘Chon’ Zepeda returns to the ring for a pivotal 140-pound showdown against Ukrainian veteran Ivan Redkach. At 35 years old, Zepeda is seeking redemption after a heartbreaking loss to Regis Prograis for the vacant WBC super lightweight title, a defeat that has brought his record to 35 wins, three losses, and two knockouts.
Zepeda, a native of Long Beach, California, has had a career that has seen both highs and lows, oscillating between the lightweight and super lightweight divisions. Despite falling short in title fights, including against Terry Flanagan for the WBO lightweight title in 2015 and Jose Ramirez for the WBC super lightweight belt, Zepeda has consistently ranked among the top fighters in his weight class. Currently, he stands as the fifth-best super lightweight according to BoxRec and seventh in The Ring’s rankings.
His opponent, Ivan Redkach, is a 38-year-old Ukrainian with a less impressive but determined record of 24 wins, seven losses, and four knockouts. Redkach is best known for his controversial fight against Prograis in 2021, where a disputed kidney blow led to a technical knockout in favor of the American champion. This upcoming bout presents an opportunity for Redkach to prove himself and solidify his place in the boxing world.
The fight is set for Friday, September 6, at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California. The event will start at 2:00 p.m. ET/11:00 p.m. PT and will be streamed live on DAZN. For Zepeda, this fight represents one final push to reclaim his standing in the super lightweight division, while Redkach aims to make his mark against a seasoned opponent.
